About Us

"About our Credit Union"

Mountmellick Credit Union

After a series of public and study meeting Mountmellick Credit Union was established with the election of its first Board of Directors on may 21st 1968.
This resulted in the election of Leon De Barra, Richard Somers and Richard Fitzpatrick as supervisors and Board of Directors consisting of Neville James, William Feeney, Mrs Mary Culliton, Frances Feeney, Oliver Flanagan and Pascal Kearney.

From the Board of Directors Mr Oliver J. Flanagan was elected President or Chairman, Mrs Mary Culliton was elected secretary, Mr. W Feeney treasurer and Frances Feeney as assistant treasurer.

The Credit Union opened for membership on the following evening May 24th 1968 in the Town Hall Mountmellick.

The concept of Credit Union has been well established in the minds of board members and supervisors. This led to a concerted campaign to spread the Credit Union message within the common bond of Mountmellick. Many hours of dedicated work given voluntary where spent encouraging people to join the Credit Union. Gradually the numbers began to grow and the demand for shares and loans increased. This increase in membership brought with it the necessity to find suitable office space.
The firs office was opened in Sarsfield Street where business was carried on each Friday night and Saturday morning.

Over the next 20 years MMCU continued to grow with shares rising from £2,325.00 in 1968 to £847,769.00 in 1998. During that time the Credit Union had also purchased a premises in Parnell Street. In 1982 the continued growth of the Credit Union led to the purchase of a site from the late Mrs Evelyn Shaw in Sarsfield Street and to the building of new offices on the site. Shortly afterwards the opening of the office on a full time basis and the employment of a full time manager and staff resulted in the continued expansion of membership and business within the Credit Union. 1990 saw the introduction of computerisation which greatly helped in updating accounts and easing the workload on both board members and staff. By the end of 1991 shares had risen to £1.4 million with loans at £1.187 million.

In 1998 thirty years after its foundation Mountmellick Credit Union once again undertook a major builiding project to cater for the needs of its members. This has given us a well equipped functional office with the needs of our members catered for and a growing membership of 5,300 including €16 million in savings and €11 million borrowed by our members.

The story of success has come about through the dedicated work of so many member, boards of directors, supervisors and staff working for the good of members with the motto always being NOT FOR PROFIT BUT FOR SERVICE and always aware that CREDIT UNION PUTS PEOPLE FIRST.

And into the future Mountmellick Credit Union will continue to::
